Re-Construction: The Temperature of Modernism
A Conversation between former Villa Aurora Fellow Veronika Kellndorfer, Mark Lee and Merry Norris
Originally through painting and then through photography, Veronika Kellndorfer has been concerned with the physical and social construction of space. In her recent body of work, Kellndorfer photographs architectural landmarks from urban centers such as Rome, Paris, São Paulo and Los Angeles, including the only house built by Oscar Niemeyer in the United States; Rudolph Schindler's Lovell Beach House; John Lautner's Silvertop home in Silver Lake; and Frank Lloyd Wright's Freeman House, among others. Kellndorfer focuses on the intimate details of windows and reflections and how they reveal the ephemeral nature of seeing, as well as the subjectivity of space. Her new catalog, Case Studies: Layers of Light and Reflection, demonstrates how this ambiguity of space is heightened by her use of highly reflective glass panels that are often life-sized. When displayed in a public setting, museum or gallery, the work invites the viewer to experience his or her own subjective surroundings.

IKKM - Artist Talk

Building site Europe – a journey through time
Sound and Video Installation by Veronika Kellndorfer & Thomas Schulz
Building site Europe – a journey through time opens the abstract construct of Europe and transforms the bewildering union of states at one of its most significant parts in a structure consisting of audio visual connections. The basis of this construct are acoustic and visual recordings made at and in the French Eurotunnel building site between 1989 and 1993.
Through the recordings, the Eurotunnel is protrayed as a gigantic sculpture. The essence of which is the reflection of the process and the utopian moment when the finished tunnel connects and binds Europe together by having dug underneath the ocean. An acoustic picture of liquid landscapes are evoked by the drilled material above Sangatte which originated below the English Channel at the point where the French landscape was punctured for the Eurotunnel building site.
