Neon sign, 98 x 1200 cm

SCHOCKEN, part 3 refers to the department store demolished in 1960, but also to the Schocken publishing house, which brought out Franz Kafka’s Amerika in 1935 and the first American edition in 1946.

Ten years after translocating the store’s neon sign—which was removed by the Nazis in 1938 and whose whereabouts are still unknown—to the facade of the Hegel Museum in Stuttgart, I installed it in the garden of a villa in Los Angeles. The letters were positioned in such a way as to be reflected in the water of the pool.

The 1930s house of the actress Anne Baxter was completely rebuilt by John Lautner in 1951. A further architectural layer was added in 2010 through renovations carried out by JohnstonMarkLee.

Leuchtschrift, 98 x 1200 cm
