Interior and plant
The stairway in the entrance hall that leads directly along the exterior facade is surrounded by glass walls, as if it were integrated into a display case. The huge negative space — the underside of the real stairway — can be seen through the clear glass facade on the front side.
I printed the stair motif — taken from the Bachstelzenweg 4, reconstruction program — on the wall which divides the stair from the entrance hall. This segment of stairway is represented as a photographic inversion; as a negative and almost is opaque.

I took the scale of the real stairs for the printed motif.
A rubber plant — that classic of the petit-bourgeois interior — can be seen in front of the stairs. I had photographed it in my studio a long time before. In its considerable enlargement, making the veins of the leaves stand out like branches, it is a reference to the painting by René Magritte from 1942 which gives this work its title.

Interieur und Pflanze
Die Treppe, die im Eingangsbereich unmittelbar entlang der Außenfassade führt, ist – als wäre sie in eine Vitrine eingebaut – von Glaswänden umgeben. Durch die unbedruckt belassene Glasscheibe an der Stirnseite kann man den riesigen Negativraum – die Untersicht der realen Treppe – sehen.

Auf die Längswand drucke ich das Motiv: Segment einer Treppe, Bachstelzenweg 4, Berliner Aufbauprogramm, in seiner fotografischen Umkehrung: als Negativ und beinahe opak. Den Maßstab der realen Treppenstufen nehme ich als Maßstab des gedruckten Treppenmotivs.
Vor die Treppenstufen schiebt sich ein Gummibaum, die klassische Pflanze des bürgerlichen Interieurs. Den Gummibaum hatte ich vor langer Zeit in meinem Atelier aufgenommen, in seiner riesenhaften Vergrößerung, die Blattrippen wie Äste hervortreten lässt, ist der Ficus eine Referenz an das gleichnamige, 1942 von René Magritte gemalte, Tafelbild.
