VERONIKA KELLNDORFER

Veronika Kellndorfer on view in
"OC Collects" at the Orange County Museum of Art

October 7 - December 30, 2012

Fifty years ago, in October 1962, thirteen adventurist ladies opened the doors to an exciting new institution, the Pavilion Gallery. Later renamed the Newport Harbor Art Museum and subsequently, the Orange County Museum of Art, the museum was the first devoted to both modern and contemporary art in Southern California and today is one of the most ambitious, innovative, mid-size museums in the United States.

As part of the museum's 50th anniversary celebration, "OC Collects" presents curated selections, including Veronika Kellndorfer's "Tokyo Story ", Schindler's Studio House, from more than a dozen of the most important private modern and contemporary art collections in Orange County. The exhibition includes rarely seen major paintings, sculptures, photographs and works on paper by established figures and emerging artists from around the world.

Layers of Light and Reflection« mit Texten u. a. von Marta Braun, Helga Lutz und Bernhard Siegert. Veronika Kellndorfer und Bernhart Schwenk stellen das Buch vor

VERONIKA KELLNDORFER | FRENCH WINDOW

A new project above the foyer staircase in the
Pinakothek der Moderne
Opening: Sunday, 1.07.2012, 12:00 a.m.
Exhibition duration: 3.07.2012-6.01.2013

Apart from the reference to the architectural term »French window« – a window that reaches from floor to ceiling – the title of the work has close associations with Marcel Duchamp’s window metaphors (»Large Glass«, »Fresh Widow«) that the artist developed as he turned away from traditional painting. Kellndorfer likewise first studied painting before moving on to more spatially related works. The Canadian Jeff Wall’s light boxes with their interplay of photography, painting, space and light, and the way in which the precise mise en scène of pictorial motifs enables a new narrative style, also played an important role.

Veronika Kellndorfer is the fourth artist to devise a site-specific project for the spacious sweeping staircase in the Pinakothek der Moderne after Olaf Metzel, Benjamin Bergmann and Olaf Nicolai. The invited artists are not given any contextual specifications; the four museums in the building (Architecture, Design, Art, Works on Paper), however, provide a wide variety of possible approaches.

Curator: Bernhart Schwenk

Polychromie architecturale

Los Angeles possesses a magnetic allure, which may have to do with its position at the edge of the Western World. From a European perspective, New York is on another continent—but Los Angelesis on another planet. For its first exhibition, the UPON PAPER space has gathered together the work of eleven artists who have each approached the phenomenon that is L.A. in their own very unique way and who have also contributed to the first edition of UPON PAPER magazine.
